Everyone should read this book, if for nothing else then to become more aware of what is happening outside of our borders. The book is about 30 girls kidnapped from St. Mary's College School for Girls in Northern Uganda's Aboke village in 1996 by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), which was estimated to be made up of 90% abducted youth between ages 8 and 17. The world's largest army of children. After years of civilians being terrorized by rebel warfare and neglected by a corrupt government, the abduction of these 30 girls was the breaking point. The book is more than a story of the abducted girls and the terror and trauma that they endured, it also describes the origins of the LRA and the numerous heroic events of many people in attempting to bring peace to this nation and awareness to the world. Kathy Cook has painstakingly done her research with 115 endnotes and three pages of bibliography. She has done an excellent job of bringing the atrocities of rebel warfare to light and reflecting the players involved, good and bad.

Interesting and horrific - a story that needs to be told but is so hard to read about.
