Review # 2 was written on 2019-02-25 00:00:00 John Diemer Stage play script known as the wedding-reception play for its experimental staging that includes the audience as reception guests. The dialogue moves along at a cracking pace with no holes barred. There is of course heavy drinking and fighting as well as catholic versus protestant antagonism and a badly behaved priest. The characters are quintessential post-war white Australian stereotypes who, even as words on the page, clearly speak with aussie accents and even though they argue savagely amongst themselves pull together in the face of outside criticism. Dimboola is unflinching realism given a poetic rhythm; it is funny, fierce and iconic. As a piece of Australian Gothic it has flawed characters in a prosaic setting leading their insular lives. Maybe its just me recognising part of my experience but you can almost feel the sticky timber floor and hard plastic chairs as you read. |
