I recently got this as part of a $5 fill a bag to support a local SPCA. It looked cute, and I expected a spunky heroine, but it didn't live up to my expectations. This was a disappointing read for me. This was just ok. In the end it was pretty simple, not much in the way of plot. Joe was a punk, idk how Michael and him were friends. I was so irritated when Michael invited Joe to the game knowing his dad only had three tickets for Emma and them. Joe shows up acting like a jerk, forcing himself to come. Michael actually finally stood up for his sister finally telling Joe they didn't have enough tickets and that he had to leave, & he responds with "make me."Their dad says he'll just have to buy another ticket but when he gets there the game is sold out. And he ends up listening to the game from the car! Emma was only accepted by Joe and allowed on their team because her getting the ball at the game led to their meeting Owen. She traded Owen's 3,000th hit for some balls, gloves, and a bat, and he also gave her a hat for her aunt. It was nice of her to mention her aunt to him, telling him she said hey. I found the whole thing a too perfect ending, but it was still nice. The drawings in here weren't necessary and I didn't like the style they were in. They were more cartoonish and didn't match the cover. Joe redeems himself somewhat in the end by giving Emma pointers on hitting the ball. Even though he whispered it. He said wait for the ball to come to her but don't tell anyone he told her. Which was funny. I realized after the author didn't describe what her characters looked like. Besides the hair color of Emma and her brother. The humor was only so-so. Some things were slightly humorous, but not really funny. The part where they were about to leave for the ballgame, and the dad's like "Can we drop you anywhere, Joe?" was funny. He had no idea why Joe was there. Also there were some baseball terminology that needed explaining. At times I had no idea what the author was talking about. If I was Emma I would have started an all-girl baseball team, and forgot about the boys. This was too simple for me. Not much happened, and in the end, there wasn't much point to this. Emma didn't really prove herself; her joining the team was based on pure luck and meeting Owen Zabriskie. I'll be giving this back where I got it from.

This book was from a stack that I brought home from school, all of which are candidates for either weeding or booktalking. I think this one's going to the weed pile. It was an easy read, but it seemed dated. There was some bullying that was never really addressed, and some other things that just didn't ring true. It was published 23 years ago and, in my opinion, has not withstood the test of time. Oh, well...
