This book is a great introduction to the rise of Evangelicals in the 19th century. Bradley does a great job breaking down the story into chapters, chronicling first the rise of the religious movement, its penetration into the lower and upper classes from the middle class, and its effect on Victorian life. Reading this book will definitely help contextualize many Victorian novels, especially the bleakness in _Jane Eyre_ and the overall tone of disgust from Charles Dickens.

This is an interesting book from both a secular and Christian perspective. For the secularist, a lot about English life, and the influence of Christianity, i.e. Evangelical and evangelical Christianity can be understood. For the Christian it spells another triumph and failure of Christianity. A triumph in that being Christian reached a population and influenced it for years afterwards. A failure, because a lot of the impetus of the Victorian Evangelical spirit was of man. To create too stringent rules, by which to force and govern the behavior of man, leads to an illusion of holiness, and in reality a suppression of the true nature of man. The mistake, in my opinion, is that depraved men thought they could create a Christian utopia on earth comprising still other depraved men. However, much good came of it, and Ian Bradley provides a balanced picture of this era. He does not write offensively, neither does he create an aloof picture of either a secular or a Christian view point. Nowhere does spiritualise things to make them magical and ridiculous. He practically analyses this history, and gives a fair account of it.
