Interesting look at the mutiny of 1857 At one time the sun never set on the British empire, but this book, detailing the Sepoy mutiny of 1857, was one of the cracks that would be the beginning of the end for it. British arrogance, Indian resistance, rule with a heavy hand - all this and more helped bring about the mutiny and plant the seeds for the end of the British rule in India.

The Red Fort was the central part of the story of the Sepoy Mutiny. The Red Fort in Delhi was the home of the last Mogul Emperor. When the mutiny occurred, many of the mutineers, both Muslim, and Hindu traveled to Delhi to see the Emperor. This posed a problem for the English. They were badly outnumbered, but if they could not retake Delhi, the rest of India would rise in revolt. The Red Fort tells of the campaign against Delhi, through the letters, journals, and reports of the people involved. It is a fascinating story, written by a great writer.
