Lots of good pieces I was not familiar with. There is a variety of genres presented. I will definitely be using this text in my American Lit class in the coming school year.

11 stories written between 1880 and 1916 by August M. Hodges, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Ida Wells Barnett and others. (The editor includes some biographical info about these authors.) Mostly cute little Christmas stories and nice pieces of Americana from this time period. (Warning one lynching story is unpleasant). The usual p.c. introductions may be of interest to some but others might prefer to enjoy the stories on their own merits. Black and white illustrations.
