Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-07 00:00:00 Karen Kafel I have been trying to get my hands on this book for years and found a copy for five dollars on ABE Books. It arrived Saturday and I soon saw why I got it so cheap... Some idiot has underlined almost every page...sometimes crossing out entire sentences! And still, I devoured it. Barrot made some great observations of life in the islands. His daily jottings are a glimpse into the island of Oahu when it was just teetering off the precipice of paradise. Barrot predicted that the way things were going, the native Hawaiians would soon be no more and that visitors would soon dominate and control. He proved to be sadly prophetic. There are great glimpses into the royal family of the time, particularly King Kamehameha III, arguably the most devastating ruler because he passed into law The Great Mahele, which left countless Hawaiians penniless and homeless. It's a fascinating book and one I recommend for those as intrigued by Hawaiian history as I am. The illustrations included are very good and add texture to the work. |
