When the hunt sends him careening about the countryside one day, Fox finds himself run ragged in order to avoid capture. Seeking a place of safety at the end of the day, he takes refuge in the village church. Here he falls asleep in the peace and quiet, only to be awakened on the following day when old Lucy Trot purchases him as a fox fur stole in the church rummage sale. Revealed as a live fox, our vulpine hero strikes a bargain with Lucy, and becomes her animal companion and sometime stole, Fox Trot... Originally published in the UK in 1987, and in this American edition the following year, Fox Trot is long out of print, and is probably not a title I would have encountered, in the natural course of events, were I not interested in the depiction of foxes in children's books. As it is, I had to track it down through inter-library loan, and although I'm glad I did, in order to satisfy my curiosity, it was not a terribly impressive book in the end. The story was cute enough, if a little too patly resolved, but the artwork did not appeal to me. Cartoonish, in that distinctly 1980s style, it was just a little too cute for my taste. There's nothing really wrong here - I would imagine that readers who first encountered the book as a child might be very fond of it - but neither text nor artwork had that subtle, vulpine charm I was hoping to encounter.

Fox on the Job by James Marshall is an adorable little book about Fox, a lazy young fox who doesn't like working very much. After breaking his bike, his mom (like all moms) says he needs to go to work to pay for a new one. Fox proceeds to try working for a number of different jobs until he finds one that's right for him. I love this book as a great way to start talking to students about work ethic and the concept of working for a living. I can totally picture parents and teachers using this book as a way to introduce tasks and chores to students at home or in the classroom. I love the illustrations, they're super simple to me but very clean. You can see how cool the fox is with his little shirt and sunglasses. The colors are generally pretty bright. A good way to get students engaged and I'd recommend this for 1st - 3rd-grade classrooms.
