"The romance between Beatrix Lennox and Stephen Fairfax-Lacey was, to me, the least compelling of the plot strands in this novel. That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy it, just that I found the continuing story of Esme and Bonnington, and the dysfunctional relationship between Helene and Rees more interesting. Once again James juggles a large cast of characters very well. A house party setting can seem a bit claustrophobic but after having read romances where the characters seem constantly to be travelling from one place to another, this was a refreshing change. It allowed James to focus more on the relationships and emotions of her characters. Aside from the romance, I really enjoyed the strong female friendships. The love and loyalty between Esme, Helene, Bea and Arabella was a delight to read and contributed a lot to my enjoyment of the novel. Again, not my absolute favourite of James' novels, but a very enjoyable read."

[Note to self: try and read the damn books in the right order… This is book 3 of the Duchess Quartet. I have read book 2 so it took me a few moments to remember who everybody was. It is a very extended cast, plus people have three different names, and that is often confusing. I thought that if Esme had a boy, she'd be disinheriting the hero of the last book? Simon Darby - but other than his name being said once, he doesn't rate a mention. He was rich, anyway wasn't he? Lace making. I recall. My problem is that I don't much like Esme, I understand her a little better after seeing her mother, but I find her endless attempts at emotional manipulation tiring. Maybe it's because I haven't read book 1 but I can't see why she was trying to bed her husband if she had a young lover. Lucky for her, Sebastian loves her because he wouldn't put it up with it otherwise. And sadly, the other main character, Bea is a mini her. I found Bea's violent changes of character too much to deal with. Either, she's the vixen coquette or she's not. And I know it is a kind of self defense to pretend that you are even worse than what people say you are, but… annoying. I did like Stephen; so he redeemed the book for me even if I can't understand why on earth he found Bea intriguing. I just wasn't sold on that romance. Perhaps it is because the book is less than half their story? (hide spoiler)]
