Review # 1 was written on 2011-04-24 00:00:00 John Zoltanski A classic read. One of the very first comprehensive English-language histories of the Habsburg Monarchy in the modern age. It does lack serious attention to economics, and its attitudes are very Edwardian in some ways. Yet the writing is graceful and elegant, the sympathy for the Monarchy and its peoples obvious. This is the first at-length history of the Habsburg Monarchy I read, back in my undergraduate days, and its memory remains vivid all these years on. Yes, outmoded in some scholarly ways, and done in a overly top-down view. But also a very, very fine introduction to the Monarchy. Very much recommended.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-04-28 00:00:00 Judson Siegel A reference book of this style rides or dies on its figures and boy does this one ride. First, a word of advice is to read the written portions for each battle and then going back and reading the information, maps, and drawings. Speaking of the drawings, this is absolutely the linchpin of the book. Great quality and the descriptors really allow you to understand what is going on and what is being depicted. The maps (which vary from standard to topographical to others) are very well depicted and described for someone who can have trouble following combat maps in other works. The battles chosen are good and varied (fighting in Burma/India border was a nice touch). Information is good as well, overall a great and short look at some WW2 'highlights' for you to touch up your knowledge or look at for the first time.
