While a school administrator, I often referred to this book for a variety of reasons. Of course, there are sample letters, reports, bulletins, etc. But I found the insight the authors offered was more important than the examples. The person reading your communication cannot see your expression or body language. Letters can be misconstrued in a zillion ways and this book tries to keep the writer-administrator alert to the nuances of language. This manual can help you cope with the unexpected: When a parent accuses a teacher of drinking at school; the no-win problems with cheerleader selections and factions; how to scale back the high school newspaper staff when they use their positions to vent against the status-quo (using sarcasm and satire to embarrass individual teachers and/or students). The authors have years of experience and offer reasoned, calm responses to the usual and unusual issues of school life. One of the most difficult jobs administrators have is to evaluate teachers and staff. Actually, it is less the evaluation process than the communication of those evaluations to individuals. The authors offer ideas that are sensitive to the needs of the school as well as the needs of the employee. This book offers more than just tips on communicating with the central office, the press, parents, students, etc. There are two more sections that are useful: - making speeches that get results and - submitting work to a professional journal. Probably by now, it would be rather dated.

An extremely readable book explaining symbolic interaction theory. Based on the work of George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer, there are numerous citations for the researcher or student who wants to investigate the writings of other experts.
