Review # 1 was written on 2009-12-20 00:00:00 Bruce Conklin This book profoundly explores and tidily sums up many of the same thoughts I have had as a farmer. People who have never killed any other being can have no concept of how doing it ricochets through the psyche. Frustrations with raccoons, one of whom recently tore most of the skull of a hen ( she's still alive, being fed three times a day with an eyedropper by my son) have driven me to want a gun. I appreciate Kimber's thoughtful conscience on hunting; he is no redneck but no ignorant city slicker with white hands, either. I took my son fishing at a captive fish pond when he was 5. I told him the fish did not feel pain when it bled; that was by no means certain. He is the sort who when he was 6 thanked the worm joyfully when for catching him a bass. He has grown up with a chicken flock and appreciates their humanity. But he was also out there excited with his BB gun when the adorable baby raccoons killed one of his hens. This is excellent subject matter that is simply not addressed by for example, the environmental movement. People really need to think about their relationship with animals, with death, with control of nature. I am really glad he put this on paper. |
