Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-23 00:00:00 Kevin Walter Surprisingly dry, clinical, and $$$-driven account of the battle between Labatt and Molson for the Canadian beer business. And yet I read it in a single sitting, so what does that say about me? Abandons honest-to-god history of the breweries themselves (or their beers, or how it came to be that every major Canadian beer came to taste pretty much exactly alike, or anything resembling a social history of beer in Canada) in favour of business jargon minutiae; it's also hurt by the fact that its story "ends" around 2003 or so (before the MolsonCoors merger, before AB-InBev), just as the nascent craft movement was picking up steam. I'd almost like to see a new edition that dives into the major players' attempts to "fake" craft, but maybe that's just me. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-01-26 00:00:00 Michael Birnholz Some really solid ideas and engaging stories, but unfortunately most of them are far too introspective for my taste. There was also a theme of “emotional debriefing” with most stories ending with an attempt to wrap everything up in a neat bow, although it was unnecessary. |
