STRICTLY SPEAKING
Where would we be without exhibitionists? These pages regularly profile Master/slave couples and fem-subs who generously share their most intimate sexual lives with our readers. How do we find them? The way so many of them find each other these days—mainly on the Web. Just as the Internet opens up a larger world of like-minded enthusiasts to these daring souls, so they in turn share their most intimate, unguarded moments of agony and ecstasy with that world via sites operated by themselves or others.
Even as we gaze, fascinated, through the window on our desktop, some old-fashioned part of us feels a pang of nostalgia for a time when pervs of a feather had no choice but to flock together. The only way to meet other kinky people was to go among them and learn their ways through the clubs, groups and organizations comprising what was once called The Scene. Certainly, this had its drawbacks. The range of potential friends and partners was far narrower and the ability to select for precisely the desired combination of characteristics among them hardly paralleled that afforded by the vast numbers of us frequenting the Internet's twenty-four-seven virtual dungeon party.
But lost along the way to our current state of perpetually wired play was the direct experience of learning the respect for ethics and etiquette and the reverence for diversity that helped us develop our unique, individual identities back in the day.
It's not uncommon now to encounter passionate, lifestyle players whose first or most profound or most challenging BDSM breakthroughs occurred in the context of paid performance for commercial URLs. This certainly doesn't make the quality of their experiences any less authentic, but we can't help wondering how it shapes their conceptions of themselves and what they do. As sex professionals, we know that professional sex differs in some important ways from the sex we have purely for the enjoyment of those actually in the room, rather than for the entertainment and profit of others.
Our hope is that some of these eager, young enthusiasts are finding time and space to define their own limits and preferences before being subsumed into the ever-expanding semi-pro kink demimonde. Odd as this sounds coming from us, some things really are more fun in private.
