THE SLEUTHSAYER
"REALITY IS JUST A CRUTCH FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN'T HANDLE SCIENCE FICTION," reads a sticker currently popular amongst genre fanatics. And in reality, Sleuth's annual "Women of Fantasy" issues have become their life support system!
This latest transfusion couldn't come at a better time: "It's nay good captain!," a 1996 Health News report began. "Scientists have proven that Star Trek is addictive {fix me up, Scotty!}. Psychologists at the University of Northumbria {in northern England} have confirmed that some Trekkies' devotion to the show leaves them scarred by classic psychological symptoms of addiction"—including "cognitive distortions" {failure to "engage"?} and "withdrawal anxiety" {must be the worm hole}. Perhaps that explains the alternative allure of "The Gay & Lesbian Star Trek Home Page"—an actual, active site on the World Wide Web. In the Trekkies' defense, the study's lead scientist Dr. Sandy Woolfson concluded: "They do tend to be better educated and more intelligent than the average."
As are the inhabitants of Sleuthdom, and there's surely nothing average about our EIGHTH voyage to that heavenly world of piece and co-X-istence where only WE boldly go. In the words of Desmond Llewelyn, the gadget guru named Q in the James Bond series: "As long as we keep in the fantasy region, we've got it." And now so do you...
A rave review in the French fashion mag Modain of the recent trend in Turn-of-the-Millennium haute couture could serve as a forerunner of this edition's natural wonders: "The fabulous Space Babes are here...invaders from outer space who have taken the Planet Fashion by storm.
