THE SLEUTHSAYER
"If you show an athlete doing what he or she does best," believes famed fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, "that athlete is going to be better than anyone else for the job." So, we'd like to think, is Sleuth.
"I think women who are in shape are even more beautiful," expounds another legendary lensman, Bert Stern. "Athletes can do things the
average girl can't." Adds a third venerable viewfinder, Bruce Weber: "Athletes don't have that 'model's attitude.' They're used to giving their all."
So is Italian ski stud Alberto Tomba, but he preferred the slopes in the ice rink during the most recent Olympics: Reminded that gold medal figure skater Katarina Witt had "spurned his advances in Calgary after he showed up to woo her with roses," La Bomba Tomba was asked at Lillehammer if he "still favored Witt or preferred American soap-opera skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan?" Asserted Alberto: "I will take all three—at once!" Now you've got 'em...the twirling trio opens this issue.
Clearly we concur with the opinion of skater Brian Boitano's coach, Linda Leaver, who admitted the Tonya & Nancy saga had brought more men into the sport: "This, particularly, has gotten more males interested." And this heightened sensitivity has erupted across all fields: 'These days," wrote one marketing expert, "sportswomen are not only big business, but have become opinion makers and style formers, the new icons of our time."
In an earlier time, bawdy Babe Ruth forever linked sex and sports by observing; "It's not fucking that ages you, but chasing after it—prompting his manager Miller Huggins to ask: "You mean you spend from 8 in the evening until 4:30 in the morning working to have pleasure for only two minutes?" Sleuth, on the other {watch} hand, toils around the clock to bring you perennial pleasure. "These were the fairy tale Games," Sports Illustrated marveled of the '94 Winter Olympics.
