THE SLEUTHSAYER
"Offsprings eternal!," I always say, and those enduring young charms begat by our dearly beloved are gathered here together for the first time in Sleuth's 23rd volume {psalm-like-it-hot} "Devilish Daughters." Relatively speaking, we trust it's an issue for all posterity.
"As the definition of celebrity has expanded," writes authoress Susan Mulcahy, "so has its extended family. The daughter or son of a celebrity is now a celebrity simply by virtue of the blood tie!" In other words, it's in the genes {or, in this case, out of the jeans}. Still, many of our off-shoots, to their credit, have achieved fame on their own: Current stars like our covergirl Jamie Lee Curtis, Bridget Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chynna Phillips, Mario Thomas, Carrie Fisher, Laura Dern, Shari Belafonte and Rae Dawn Chong are equally as well known today as their famous parents. To paraphrase that old line, apparently nothing succeeds like succession.
As Tommy James and the Shondells sang: "CHILDREN BEHAVE! That's what they say when we're together. And watch how you play. If they ever knew.. .". And now, to continue the theme, we're "runnin' just as fast as we can" to compile the best nips off the of block into this daughter-drenched delight. We begin, in descending order {naturally}, with "Screen Genes' -the sweeties from the swashbucklers. Next, "The Melody Lingers On" with vivacious variations on a theme, followed by the paternal pride of "Daddy's Girls" and the mother's little helpers of "Maternal Instincts." Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither were the maidens of our "Mama Mia" section—aspiring actresses who've yet to be "Ms. Directed." The transition from foreign directors' daughters lens itself to our seventh section, "Cop a Fille'the pick of Parisian progeny, and we leave 'em laughing with "Jokers Wild!," "School for Scandal," and "Both Sides Now'=damsels with a double legacy.
Though their pedigrees present a tough act to follow, it seems the sleek will inherit the Earth. Surely everyone we've included is worth relating, and while it's a-parent these popular progenitors prefer to protect their young, we hope they won't brood about it. In any case, we ask their forbearance {for baring . . .}. After all, to heir is human, to forgive truly divine!
