McCarthy was born in Los Angeles, California, to a middle-class Irish American Catholic family. She has three sisters who are named Joanne, Jenny and Lynette. Her mother, Linda, was a housewife, and her father, Dan McCarthy, was a steel mill foreman. Amy's older sister, Jenny, has also posed for Playboy. Her cousin is Melissa McCarthy of Gilmore Girls fame.
