EDITORIAL NOTE
STRICTLY SPEAKING
Where are no wrong thoughts, only wrong actions. Observers of this magazine have no doubt noted that we have, of late, returned to presenting harsher scenarios in our pictorials, fiction and artwork. We've also presented more candidly the down-and-dirty side of kink, with more enema play, more intrusive medical scenes and a vast, golden flood of pent-up pee from our luscious models. Reading this month's Chain Mail, it's evident that we're pleasing our readers with this most distinctly un-PC approach, and doubtless infuriating those who believe such images are either demonically inspired or reinforce patriarchal domination. Our approach is pleasure-driven while theirs is all about guilt.
In fact, they embrace guilt, as professional "feminist" porn-basher Robert Jensen suggests in his excruciatingly unreadable new book, Getting Off. Admitting that his brand of New Age puritanism hasn't gotten much traction, politically or socially, outside the rarified radfern academic circles in which he travels, he suggests that guilt "can be a productive part of a process by which one comes to see that an action was morally unacceptable and by which one can rectify, to the degree possible, injuries done to others and begin the process of ensuring the bad action is not repeated."
In fact, the exact opposite is true. Guilt creates self-loathing and self-loathing curdles into rage. As both political and religious extremists demonstrate throughout the world, it is a short course from self-loathing to the projection of the wrath it engenders onto those who "inspire" guilt-inducing impulses. Thus it is that the most prudish and puritanical societies on earth, from China to Saudi Arabia, routinely brutalize women and sexually nonconformist men in horrific ways. It's easier to blame others for leading virtuous souls astray than to admit what lurks inside all souls, virtuous and otherwise.
It's understanding and acceptance of our true natures that enables us to make conscious, ethical choices regarding the expression of our natural impulses. We celebrate the freedom to fantasize about pleasures most depraved and the wisdom to act out our instincts with consenting partners in a safe and thoughtful manner.
