The merry, merry month of May does not have the same meaning as it did in days of old, when festivals and Maypole dancing were excuses for a fertility rite, or to put it more plainly, a tumble in the hay. Nowadays you can get your thrills by reading a copy of Men Only. Try Brian McConnell's fascinating piece Smash & Grab, on the bizarre allurement of sex crimes. McConnell, for many years a Fleet Street crime reporter, claims that some of the most exciting reading around is to be found in factual crime books. The lovely Louise Fletcher, star of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, spoke candidly to our interviewer, Mike Bygrave, about playing a sadistic nurse in the movie — emphasising that it was only a role !
It's said that pop groups know a few things about acting as well, and David Sandison gives an amazing insight into some of the parts they play in Cold Comfort Palm, putting a new slant on the meaning of a stiff drink. In Chet Bernard's The Fabulous Thrill-of-the-Month Club, you can get anything for the asking — and the price. Some people get their thrills by watching their favourite team play, and our own Fiona Richmond gets the inside story from Malcolm Allison, one of the most controversial managers around. She wouldn't say if he offered her a place in the team — though she'd be sure to draw record gates.
