Recently a farmer named Zhang Xinwen of Shijiazhuang in Northern China was sentenced to 20 years in jail for operating an illegal bookstore along with his wife and several others. Zhang had first opened the store in 1992 and sold more than 3,000 sexually-oriented books before being closed down. He reopened the shop in 1994, selling more than 47,000 allegedly obscene books and 39,000 other illegal publications, earning more than $22,000 in one year of operation. The average Chinese citizen earns about $325 per year.
But even with 20 years of jail time, Zhang got off light, since some similar offenders have been sentenced to death. Hey, we're proud of SHAVED ORIENTAILS and think its a magazine unique among its peers, and while we believe it should be available to prisoners, we certainly don't think it's worth going to jail for. And so we say, Hooray for the First Amendment and let's all keep a vigilant eye out for those who would seek to whittle away at it in the name of "family values," which is really another name for repression, censorship and the condemnation of anyone who happens to be a bit "different" from the so-called "norm."
If you're a porn-lover, have a brain in your head and can put two and two together, please vote for the Presidential candidate who is more liberal and will continue to defend First Amendment rights—such as your right to read this magazine—instead of erode them. If you still don't get it, his initials are WBC—the same as the corporation which publishes SHAVED ORIENTAILS.
