Playboy's The Year in Sex # 2 (1989) - 1988 Reviewed

Welcome back to the wonderful world of lust! You loved The Year in Sex: "1987 Reviewed," so we decided to bring you a sequel. Frankly, there were times we weren't sure we'd have enough material to pull it off. Where were the Gary Harts, the Donna Rices, the Jim Bakkers of 1988? We needn't have worried. Dan Quayle's golf weekend in Florida may not have lived up to Hart's voyage to Bimini, but Jimmy Swaggart made it abundantly clear why he'd always been so hard on fellow preachers' sexual lapses. His trysts with hooker Debra Murphree made hot copy (and possibly sweet reading for a fellow Assemblyman of God, the Reverend Marvin Gorman, whose own peccadilloes Swaggart had earlier exposed along with those of Bakker). Celebrities in every field, from showbiz to politics, got involved in triangles, some of them fairly awkward. And there was a bumper crop of kiss-and-tell books: The best of the batch, The Ragman's Son, proved Kirk Douglas to be a damned fine writer. But 1988's biggest love-hate story was that of boxing champ Mike Tyson, his actress bride Robin Givens and her mother, Ruth Roper. That bout's not over yet-stay tuned.
