EDITORIAL NOTE
Assembling each issue of a magazine is akin to editing a movie; there's
"outtakes"—i.e. articles and photo spreads that didn't make the final
cut. Here's a couple that I swept from the cutting room floor—if you
dig Japanese anime, visit that genre's living embodiment, Apollo Smile
(http://apolloites.org). By the way, I appreciate 99.9% of the e-mail;
your suggestions are very welcome and we try to delegate staffers to
comply with personal requests. But the organization that identifies
itself as TARBA? Enough already! Stop asking the same question, 'Who's
stronger, Batman or Tarzan?" How the hell would I know? Get a life.
Well, it's 2:20 AM. Upon wrapping this issue, three hours ago, yours
truly and editor Bill George embarked on our monthly voyage to Nichi
Bei Kai. Bill slugged down a couple belts of sake. Me, I'm a Diet Pepsi
person. We debated. Should we relocate Femme Fatales to L.A. in the
fall?—or early '98? (our home office is in Baltimore, "the city that
reads"—right. The regional literati have approved MacDonald's comic
books as remedial education. Learn to read the Nike billboards and you
instantly earn a diploma). Baltimore used to be a happenin' town for
sci-fi & fantasy, but the passing of Rick Neff concluded that era;
now all that's left are forgotten armchair relics (like Blottoman...the
blimp and the ventriloquist dummy that she masquerades as the Singing
Nun...the Son of Cochise). Yep, time for Bill and me to roll.
And here's my message for critics who have persecuted Mick Garris for
his miniseries, THE SHINING: get bent. Garris' vision was superior to
Stanley Kubrick's narcissistic ode to inertia (but thanks,
Stan—whenever I need the sleep, I'll pop your version into the VCR).
And, yes, I loved Stephen King's sentimental epilogue to the teleplay;
so crucify me. Furthermore, King, Garris & actress Rebecca De
Mornay turned 'Wendy Torrance" from a distaff Barney Fife (Kubrick's
version) into a role model.
Back to work, Danny Scap just interviewed Angie Dickinson who, at 66,
still has legs—like you wouldn't believe!
