EDITORIAL NOTE
Now that all of the hoopla has long since passed over the wedding of Prince Charles
to Lady Diana, it's time to examine one or two issues that were buried under the
festivities.
Many Americans criticized the royal family for putting on such a big show of splendor
and riches when barely a mile away in London, and in surrounding cities, poverty
riots were going on, accompanied by a generous sprinkling of racial hatred. It
seemed ludicrous to us that with people unable to eat and clothe themselves adequately
the world was watching a frivolous ceremony that cost millions of dollars. And
the royal family doesn't do much except smile their way through obsolete rituals
and play polo, anyway. Americans were congratulating themselves that they got
rid of the monarchy over 200 years ago.
But here we may have a case of people in glass houses who shouldn't throw stones.
We have some severe economic trouble of our own—high interest rates, high
inflation, low investments, energy shortages, etc.—yet our legislators,
our "royal family", ride around in limosines, take off on junkets, and
vote budgets with layouts for hundreds of already-rich special interests. Nancy
Reagan presented the royal couple an $8000 glass bowl (which we paid for) and
circled London in eight different and expensive gowns. Obviously, English leaders
don't have a monopoly on extravagance.
Ceremonies are certainly an important part of our popular culture. We don't advocate
a super-serious, spoilsport form of government. But large expenditures for window-dressing
must be put in perspective. It's silly to say, "Take the party money and
put it towards Social Security." It would really only be a drop in the bucket.
But the effect of extravagance on our society must be realized.
We advocate toning down the big shows and expense accounts until every member
of society has a better opportunity to share the wealth.
