EDITORIAL NOTE
Former Sex Kitten Donna Rice: "Do as I say, not as I do"
There are none so virtuous as reformed sinners, to paraphrase an old adage, and
Donna Rice Hughes, well established today as a leading crusader against pornography
and indecency in cyberspace, certainly fits that description to a "t."
Few will forget that Ms.Hughes, who was known internationally as simply Donna
Rice in 1988, wound up in the middle of a sex scandal as the bed-mate of married
Presidential candidate Gary Hart of Colorado and was instrumental in scuttling
his bid for high office. Photos of Donna, clad only in a bikini, sitting on the
lap of hapless Gary, were seen all over the world.
Today, Ms. Hughes and her present partner Dee Jepsen (a different kind of "bed-mate"),
are rabidly leading the pack of porno-on-the-Internet stalkers, determined to
put an end to adult material on computer networks. Their grass roots group is
called "Enough Is Enough" and the two ladies were the first to march
into congressional hearings with graphic displays of violent, hardcore pornography
which they claim they had plucked off the Internet. The two women were instrumental
in overcoming inertia among Senate Republican leaders who were reluctant to start
messing around with yet another attack on the First Amendment to the Constitution.
They plied the Senators with images of bondage, bestiality and pedophilia which
they claim are available to everyone, including children, on the Internet.
"A lot of people assume we are talking about pictures from Hustler or Penthouse,"
said Ms. Hughes in a recent New York Times article. "What we're really talking
about here would make all that look like Donald Duck." What they're trying
to do, says Ms. Hughes, is to bring together the two feuding wings of the conservative
movement: morality-based groups like the Christian Coalition that want even tougher
rules, and free market advocates like House Speaker Newt Gingrich who opposes
government restrictions on cyberspace.
Hughes and Jepsen were instrumental in drumming up support for a bill that passed
the Senate last June to impose jail terms and heavy penalties on people who knowingly
transmit material that is deemed "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy or indecent."
Senator James Exon defends the "Enough-ers" (he was the sponsor of a
provision in the telecommunications bill that would impose jail terms and heavy
fines on people who transmit porn over the computer networks or who make "patently
offensive" descriptions of sexual activity or excretion, available to people
under the age of 18).
Exon says that Hughes and Jepsen are our best hope to avoid an all-out blitz by
the Religious Right because they are attempting to work within the Constitution
to produce a federal bill that would curb porn "knowingly" transmitted
over the Internet. They argue that on-line services should not be held liable
if they are merely conduits for material produced by others without their knowledge,
whereas the Christian Coalition and others argue that anyone allowing adult material
on-line should be held as accountable as those producing the "offensive"
material.
We all know that the time will come when some form of policing of the networks
will be mandated, but Adult PC Guide is adamantly opposed to any rulings which
in any way compromises the First Amendment. We are confident that, very soon,
producers of adult material will devise a way to effectively prohibit access to
adult material on a computer to all except those adults who wish to access it.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
The publisher of Adult PC Guide fully supports all responsible efforts to prevent
minors from accessing, viewing or otherwise coming into contact with adult material
on the Internet. Likewise, we are adamently opposed to the efforts of anyone to
use the Internet in an effort to contact and exploit minors, through personal
contact, by correspondence or by the exchange of any information, visual or otherwise
regarding minors on the Internet. Hopefully, lawful methods will be found in the very near future to prevent access
to all adult material on the Internet by minors, and that all information on the
Internet attempting to exploit minors in any way will be removed and those responsible
for this prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
In full support of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States,
we believe that adults should have full freedom and the option to access, possess
and view or otherwise enjoy material of whatever nature, according to their own
tastes and conscience.
Adult PC Guide does not, and will not allow any material concerning minors to
be published in this magazine, nor will we ever knowingly publish anything that
might enable anyone, adult or minor, to access or otherwise possess material of
this nature.
