there once was a time when all an L.A. based porn producer had to do in order to cast his next magnum opus was get on the horn with one of the half dozen or so XXX talent agents operating locally and present them his shopping list. If we could have listened in, we might have heard something like this: "Shoot's tomorrow... Yeah... I'll be needing two brunette tops — each eight or better — and, uh. one daddy type — with or without beard — also a versatile college type who can deliver a couple of lines — and two blond bottoms. No wait — make that three blond bottoms... No, I don't care if they're blond from a bottle. It's all going to end up in the same place."
The "talent" back then was plentiful, relatively affordable, and most important of all — local. I myself can recall working on or hanging out around the sets of any number of productions that acquired most or all of their casts in this manner. Names like J.J. Talent, The Daniel Holt Agency, and more recently Eros Casting (run for a time by former pornstar Lee Jennings) were familiar names indeed with producers and directors, providing them with invaluable resources.
But all that has changed, There are only two local casting services doing business today — and they represent a very small handful of guys. Though agents in general are more plentiful than ever, most have set up shop in other parts of the country and more often than not are focused more on getting their clients signed up for dance and strip circuit gigs than glamorous motion picture roles. So where have all the porn boys gone? There certainly is no longer a high concentration in L.A.
Just the other day for example I got a call from director John Travis, hard at work on his latest Studio 2000 project. "I need a bottom," he confessed to me over the receiver... "Today, as a matter of fact. I've had a cancellation. Jesus, there just aren't any stars living in town these days. Do you know of anyone?" Once the question was put to me directly, I found myself appalled at not being able to reply in the affirmitive. I too found myself thinking "Where is everybody?" The feeling was kind of eerie. "My God!" I realized, "Hollywood has a dearth of sex stars for a change!"
It's not that there are fewer porn stars finding work these days. Quite the contrary. But they are definitely spread thin geographically and apparantly far fewer are keen these days on moving out here, pursuing video work on the fast track, or learning to play the game of NAKED MOVIESTAR and win.
Some pundits have suggested that the new breed of agent as flesh packager may prove the ruination of commercial porn as we know it. For starters, there's the undeniable fact that agents cost everyone more money — another mouth to feed as it were. Everyone agrees that pornstars deserve good pay and fair compensation. But as more and more of them come to the biz from outside the local region, transportation and accommodation start to become a major factor — suddenly we're far, far away from the days when one could drive down Santa Monica Blvd. on a weekend afternoon and entirely cast your next project from the everpresent "dayworkers".
The last time I looked, agents scattered across Denver, Galveston, Atlanta, and Boston (as well as L.A.) were speaking for almost half the blue movie stars on the circuit. Their clients include such big names as Cort Stevens, Bo Summers, Chase Hunter, Chad Donovan, Chip Daniels, and even Ryan Idol. Another director lamented to me in confidence that he resents flying guys into L.A.for a project, putting them up in a nice hotel, and more often than not locking them into a role sight unseen! And how is a producer who's just signed on for all this supposed to feel when the lad flies out and does your project — but also manages to squeeze in a second (and usually forgettable) video in an the side - sometimes right under the nose of his temporary benefactor. Not that any of the performers listed above have pulled this little trick - that I know of! But you: bet that angle has been worked and worked again.
So as the industry trudges into its second quarter century. I cant help but wonder if the salad days of the biz are gone for good It's strange to find oneself romanticizing about porn. But as so many have discovered for themselves (usually the hard way) romance turns up in the damdest places.
Oh, just for the record, John Travis did find hislast-minute bottom boy that weekend. As luck would have it, one of the all-time great rumps was in town and eager for work. The star in question was "Domino" and the flick has became His Big Brother, The situation, as they say.
resolved itself. But one wonders if there ever was a time and place here in L.A. that the gay porn industry had its own "Schwab's Drugstore" — ie. some manner of sun-drenched wading pool for sex boys cooling their heel between offers. If it was out there, surely it's long gone by now. I am to appreciate the greater lengths that directors and producers have to go these days to bring us the slick, clever, world-class smut we've accustomed ourselves too... Or am I just describing this magazine? I do go on sometimes you know...
