As we go to press, it seems we've lost one of the great ones, Alex deRenzy. The Gonzo genre of adult films wouldn't be possible without him. He's the original, Great Sex Filmmaker. Watching him shoot, with his hovering, handheld style, giving the viewer the perfect "Dutch door" view of the action, always closing in to give you the extreme close-up of super-hardcore, is nirvana to a porn fan. Alex fought for First Amendment rights back when he shot what he wanted, ran the films in his own theater in San Francisco, and ended up bedding more beautiful women and having more kids than you could imagine. He shot classic films like Femmes de Sade, Babyface and the list goes on and on. In the early `90s, he even shot under the name Rex Borsky for Rosebud Pictures, of which he was a part owner at one point. Alex quietly stayed up in Mill Valley, California, just about 45 minutes north of San Francisco and seemed to be content. Recently, he got the itch to return to shooting for Devil's Films and was planning a series of pictures shot by Buddy Rose...get it? Alex died from a heart attack and complications from diabetes in a hotel room in Los Angeles. Ironically, he was a man that shot most of his recent work at home. Like the brazen maverick that he always was, Alex died in the middle of work, in another town, away from home. For actors turned directors like John Stagliano, John Leslie and Tom Byron, he is the originator of their style and many others. And in a parting thought, we have to acknowledge that when we compose this magazine, there's an element of Alex's eye for eroticism we keep alive by always thinking about how he saw it. Alex, we'll miss you. Thank you for all the wonderful erotic moments you brought to us over our lifetime.
