Big Field Book

I chose this book as I am collecting books to read to my year 3 class. I thought this would really appeal to that age range and especially engage the boys.

It was horrid Henry's birthday and he recieves a late present from his aunt Greta, a lovely pink pair of lacy knickers. Aunt Greta, despite many reminders thinks that Henry is a girl!!
After hiding the knickers away in his drawer, Henry accidently puts them on one day when he is late for school. The story of how Henry tries to hid the pink pants from everyone follows. He looks in lost property for some boys pants, he tries to persuade his friend to swap with him but all to no avail. He finally decided to take them off as having no pants is much better than having girls pants. When the teacher tells him that it is P.E time, Henry announces that he cannot do it because he has no pants on...the teacher has found a pair he can borrow...a lovely pink lacy pair.

I think that this book would appeal to year 2 or year 3. The children would find the book funny and it would be a light-hearted way to approach some of the issues in the book such as Henry being un-kind to other children in the playground.

It has lovely illustrations in the book which match the text. It is an Early reader book so it bridges the step between picture books to more word based books.
