Susan DuBois stayed in her home and witnessed the powerful forces of Hurricane Katrina. After photographing the aftermath of the storm, she felt that the nation should see what the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast faced when they returned to their homes. The infrastructure of the Coast has been destroyed and will take years to rebuild. Many lives were lost during the storm. Thousands of homes, cars, and businesses have been destroyed leaving many people homeless, unemployed and without transportation. When it was realized that the government would not arrive for days, the people pulled together and with the help of church groups throughout the U.S. that arrived almost immediately after the storm, the people pulled up their bootstraps and got to work. Although everyone on the coast suffered damage, the southern hospitality and the spirit of the people survived.
