Children's Literature

The "Simple Science" series brings concepts and examples into a child's world with colorful photographs and appropriate brief text. Specific vocabulary is highlighted (some pronunciation included) and featured in a short glossary and index. Since temperature converts things to a solid, liquid, or gas, information is given to explain changes about common events in nature and in every day life. There is an easy experiment using water, a freezer, and a microwave for an adult to help youngsters see the effects of temperature. More exploration on subjects such as weather and seasons, hot and cold, and conducting a scientific experiment are nicely integrated into the text, which would be ideal for read-alouds and center time. For instance, what did the famous scientist Galileo know about temperature? Why do people in some cultures wear only white clothes and have mostly white buildings? What are some of the purposes for determining temperature? How do changes in temperature result in variations in appearance? These are some of the questions that are demonstrated by simple illustrations that students already know. While early elementary children begin to study temperature, a variety of hands-on experiences at home, in the classroom, or elsewhere make science connections for them in personal ways. The series addresses other forces such as motion and movement, gravity, and magnetism, which are fundamental aspects of the universe. Delivered with focus and an engaging style, topics are not overly technical for the targeted age group. A child's growing development allows for a greater scope of understanding as they interact with science more thoroughly over time. In the process, new discoveriesand activities become meaningful as youngsters, families, and educators study together with "Simple Science." Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed
