Describes the physical characteristics, diet, behavior, and life cycle of kangaroos, as well as their relationship with humans.
There are over 50 kinds of animals known as kangaroos. They range in size and shape from the largest and most well known, the red kangaroo, to a potoroo, about the size of a rat. Readers will glean information about a few of them: their size, diet, geographic location, and interactions with humans. Some of the color photos provide fascinating glimpses into these animals, such as the one showing the male kangaroos balancing on their tails and kicking out with both hind feet, or the picture of the red kangaroo flopping in a hole to take a nap. Some of the photos intended for identification could have used more background to give the reader a sense of the animal's size. The chapter on reproduction includes close-up photos of the development of the joey inside the pouch. Part of the "Carolrhoda Nature Watch Books," the text is well organized and clear. Students using this for reports will also find the glossary and index useful. Animal lovers will enjoy learning about the variety and traits of these peculiar creatures. 2000, Carolrhoda Books, Ages 8 to 12, $22.60. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
