German Army And Genocide Book

This book is a reproduction of an exhibit that toured Germany, Austria, and other European countries from 1995-1999, and caused a lot of stir. It clearly demonstrates the deep involvement of the German Army (Wehrmacht) in wholesale oppression and murder in Eastern Europe during the Nazi era --- including rounding up Jews and putting them in ghettos, as well as assisting in liquidation of those ghettos later, massacres of civilians in huge numbers, hangings, mass starvation, burning villages, and more. Victims included "partisans," "Gypsies," Russian POWs, Poles, Jews, and many, many more. The army did this on its own and in cooperation with the SS, SD, and Gestapo. (So much for the myth that the German Army kept its hands clean of the Nazi state's atrocities.) The exhibit documents this behavior with primary materials, including letters, orders, and photos taken and kept by German soldiers, often with telling captions. I learned a huge amount I had not known. My only ding is that the photos are very small, so I read the whole book with a magnifying glass at hand. I wish I'd seen the exhibit, as I think this material, though very graphic, deserves careful examination.
