In this two-volume reference, the authors summarize the type and content of Early Christian writings, concluding each entry with a short bibliography of editions, translations, and secondary sources. Entries for major figures, such as John Chrysostom and Augustine, are lengthy, providing a detailed exposition on their careers and writings. Though a few chapters are devoted to a single writer, most are thematic, containing separate entries for the writers of an era, genre, or ideology. A sampling of chapter topics includes the letters of Paul, the gospel tradition, Greek writers of the Arian controversy, Christian poetry of the West, the age of the barbarian invasions, and minor exegetes in the Greek world of the 5th and 6th centuries. The entries include Greek writers through 553 (the Fifth Ecumenical Council of Constantinople) and Latin writers through the 6th century. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
