Defines many of the terms related to the study of the Earth, ecology, environmental protection, and pollution.
Gr 3-5-Clearly intended to support the other books in a series, this simple dictionary of terms used in ecology and environmental science discussions does not stand well on its own. Each entry is color-coded by subject and defined in one or two short sentences. Cross-references are indicated by words in italic type, though blind references crop up (e.g., sea animal under porpoise). Some definitions are quite precise; others lack clarity. Absolutely no effort has been made to put any of the information into context, except by reference to other books in the series. For example, the definition of plastic says what it's made of and how it can be used, but not the fact that it isn't biodegradable. Each page has a few small, well-reproduced color illustrations, some of which are informative cartoons. Roma Dehr and Ronald Bazar's Good Planets Are Hard to Find (Firefly, 1990) defines fewer terms but in much greater detail and with ample contextual information. Buy it instead.-Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
