My Times in Black and White: Race and Power at The New York Times
For starters, this book purports to be about Gerald Boyd and includes a few old black and white photos of him (plus a glamor shot of his second wife Robin, who actually wrote the book after his death) but it in realty is just about Jason Blair.
I have been meaning to read this for a while. As a former newspaper reporter here in DC, I had worked alongside Jason Blair on many stories, both before and after he went to work for the Times.
Once the controversy erupted, I ended up staking out his parent's house in the suburban hell of outer Fairfax County in an effort to get a comment from him.
He never surfaced and has said very little about the story of how we went to work for the Times as a youngster who had done very little to prove himself.
Of course, race played a significant part of that route and I think that strikes a little too close to home for Boyd, who is not really able to talk about the issue without feeling uncomfortable himself.
Despite Boyd's credentials, I think he always felt defensive and never more so than after the Blair thing turned Times reporters into defensive bomb throwers.
The saddest part of this book is Boyd's settling scores with old Times hands, who can't say anything bad about Boyd, because he's dead, but also must feel like this one-sided account is a bit Alice in Wonderland. Boyd had a great career and did a lot of good newspaper work but I think this book does not serve his legacy.
