Bears: Polar Bears, Black Bears and Grizzly Bears Book

This is a great informational book for the preschool or kindergarten level where students are able to learn about the different types of bears and how they interact with their habitat. The book pages through the three types of North American bears: the black bear, grizzly bear, and polar bear. The book compares and contrasts the diet, habitat, and behavior of these three types of bears.

I read this book to my preschooler and she was very engaged in the informational story. She was able to connect the behavior of bears to dogs and I was very impressed with her ability to synthesize the two animals. I would include this book for the lower elementary levels during science and environmental learning. Students at the lower level continuously learn about habitat and this book does a good job in explaining this concept.

I would read this book aloud and give students the opportunity to predict what physical characteristics of a bear tell us about what bears eat and where bears live. My preschooler enjoyed the question/answer format and I think most students would enjoy reading and answering questions about this interesting animal. Learning about animals is an important and fascinating theme for any level. This book could be a part of a middle elementary grade classroom library.
