Whited Out: Unique Perspectives on Black Identity and Honors Achievement, Vol. 331 Book

A former U.S. Secretary of Education argues that African American academic success is our nation's most important civil rights issue. He and co-author Witty (incidentally, his sister) explain how education is necessary to achieve racial equality and social justice. The book includes specific actions that community members can take to motivate African American children to succeed in school, and to work toward closing the achievement gap. It also provides a list of further reading and organizations dedicated to this issue.

Controversy alert! When I discovered that Rod Paige had been Secretary of Education during George W. Bush's first term, my liberal blood pressure started rising. However, I'm determined to explore ideas that challenge my preconceived notions. I've long been skeptical about charter schools and vouchers, but Paige makes effective arguments for both programs here. I'm still considering both issues, and don't have a firm stand. But I more fully understand why these approaches are promoted, even if I still remain reluctant to support them.
