René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle (1643-1687) had claimed the entire Louisiana Territory for France in 1682. He next set out from France with four ships, landing somewhere in East Texas. Trying to locate the mouth of the Mississippi River, the explorers were ravaged by disease, weakened by hard labor, and gored by buffalo.
