Napoleon Bonaparte of France sold the vast tract of land known as the country of Louisiana in 1803. The price - fifteen million dollars. There was great opposition to this plan which was ridiculed by many who insisted the region was not only wild but uninhabitable and worthless. Lewis and Clark's successful expedition influenced the history of the West immensely and Brooks has done a marvelous job describing that time.
