This account follows the extraordinary racing career of Duke Nalon from its beginning in 1934 through his last ride—a 100 mile win in a midget over Terre Haute's Action Track in October, 1954. Sandwiched within that time frame, Nalon was active with midgets, sprinters and championship cars.
He won countless midget feature events and captured several A.A.A. sprint car titles. Along the way he twice established a new record for sprint cars during qualifications.
Duke's fame reached its peak during his years with the super powerful Novi racecars that competed only in the Indianapolis 500 race. While two drivers perished at the wheel of a Novi, Nalon soldiered on. During his tenure with the Novi team, he achieved every goal save an all-elusive win. He set qualifying marks and started the race from the pole twice. His best Novi finish was a third—an achievement beyond that of all the other outstanding Novi throttle jockeys. The "Iron Duke," as he came to be known, was an outstanding race driver in an era with no shortage of racing daredevils.
His outstanding racing skills coupled with his pleasing and refreshing persona unquestionably made him a fan favorite from coast-to-coast.
