This report prepared for the National Institutes of Health is divided into 10 major sections: an introduction and discussion of major concepts and procedures underlying this review; major studies reviewed and methodological problems commonly found in the research; a condensed summary of the chief aspects of biological, social, and psychological knowledge and theory concerning adolescent sexuality; a discussion of the central features of the society with which contemporary adolescents interact; sexual behaviors and attitudes of the developing adolescent; contraceptive attitudes and behaviors; illegitimacy among adolescents; adolescent abortion, teenage marriages, and childbearing within marriage; summary and conclusions, together with implications for further research, policies, and programs.
