Rabbi Kaye and Sister Eve have to choose between their religious commitment and their love for each other.
Rabbi Joshua Kaye, upset with the materialism of his suburban Ohio congregation, falls in love with Sister Eve. They share questions about faith and organized religion. He leaves his job and family to find himself, back to his roots in Los Angeles. This is 1970, so he becomes a social activist. He follows Eve to Guatemala and wangles a job with the Peace Corps. She leaves her school, and they try to ``really'' do something for the people. They meet a harsh reality--but do consummate their love. At the end, he returns to his family and she to her vows. There are some brilliant pages describing Kaye's congregants, but in Guatemala the idealism and the politics get to be too much. The Jewish emphasis here makes this mainly for libraries with Jewish readership.-- Barbara Maslekoff, Ohioana Lib., Columbus
