There have been a number of children's novels written about the American Civil War. The most successful of them are aimed at young boys, such as Johnny Rebel and Red Badge of Courage. Now there is an exciting book about this part of our history written especially for nine to twelve-year-old girls. Author Donna Getzinger has written a historical novel full of adventure and intrigue titled The Picture Wagon about a young girl that is recruited to spy for the Union army. It is perfect for young history buffs!
A story based on the career of the author's great-great-grandfather who was a traveling photographer in the early days of photography. The story is fictional, but the characters, setting, and historical background are based on family letters dating between 1856 and 1862. The author's grandmother Elaine Getzinger Callard read those letters and created the original story of The Picture Wagon from them. Actual wagons like the one Joanna drives in this story can be seen at the Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York.
The daughter of a traveling photographer must take over her father's trade when he falls ill during the Civil War.
