The Southampton Plot of 1415 aimed to overthrow the House of Lancaster, established in 1399 by Henry IV, and replace the young, warlike and ambitious Henry V as king of England by the mild and inept Edmund Mortimer, earl of March, the last of his line. This astonishing conspiracy, discovered shortly before Henry V's invasion of France which inaugurated the renewal of the Hundred Years War, never had any chance of success. The ringleader was the king's disaffected cousin, Richard, earl of Cambridge, a landless peer, who was important only as heir-apparent to his childless elder brother, Edward, duke of York.
