Combines the story of the pioneers with recipes and the history of food from the opening and development of the American West.
Gr 2-4-This picture book attempts to describe a pioneer family's covered-wagon journey from Missouri to the Oregon territory, the Gold Rush, the lives of the cowboys, and what they all ate while supplying three representative recipes readers can make at home. The large-type text is slight and generalized, peppered with boldface words and their pronunciations, with definitions found in a glossary at the end. The illustrations are a mixture of mediocre reproductions of paintings of the period and black-and-white and full-color photographs of racially diverse present-day children and adults cooking. It is sad to see such a rich and complex story reduced to a few lifeless sentences.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
