Originally published in 1914 and 1915, The President and His Powers and The United States and Peace were based on a series of lectures given by the former President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In the first, Taft put forth a vision of a constitutionally limited presidency delivered in response to the more expansive vision articulated by his predecessor in the White House, Theodore Roosevelt. His lectures on foreign policy, sponsored by the New York Peace Society just before the outbreak of World War I, served as a defense of the Monroe Doctrine, argued for federal intervention against the states in defense of the treaty rights of alien residents of the United States, and examined the possibilities of international arbitration for resolving conflict. Each of the works is preceded by a brief commentary by, respectively, McWilliams (political science, Rutgers U.) and Gerrity (formerly American history, St. Joseph's U.).
