Before I read this book, I reread the first book, covering the years 1805-1807. Albeit a pleasurable endeavor, even for a second time, I had another motive. Because the two books belong together, rereading the first creates a continuity that is essential to rate the entire work.
The French army had been almost constantly engaged in war since the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. The Grand Armée had experienced remarkable success wherever they campaigned, but the eventual loss of men outweighs the experience of winning victories. This period, 1808-1812, saw many great victories but the message was written in the sand. Napoleon’s troops were soon fighting foes on many different fronts. The Spanish and British to the southwest, the Austrians, and Russians to the east, when combined with their most formable foe, the war of attrition, would soon seal their fate and mark Napoleon’s downfall.
This missive demonstrates that military weapons, organization, and tactics, are constantly evolving. Napoleon understood this very well and was constantly changing his troops to stay ahead of the development curve. Other European powers saw the phenomena but were largely unable to keep up; making their changes almost obsolete upon implementation.
This book briefly covers the Battle of Teugen - Hausen (April 19 – 21, 1809), Battle of Echmuhl (April 22), displaying a turnaround attack that had never before been seen and was not equaled until General George Patton’s Third Army’s ninety degree turn from Lorraine to relieve the besieged town of Bastogne, in the Belgian Ardennes. Short entries are made of the Battle of Linz (May 17), Battle of Aspern – Essling (May 21 -22), Battle of Raab (June 14), Battle of Wagram (July 5 - 6), proving that Bonaparte was still a force to be reckoned with. It also shows that the sizes of the opposing armies were growing larger and larger. As can be logically concluded, the numbers of causalities also grow consistently.
The book concludes with a summary of Napoleon’s disastrous campaign to Moscow; changing the playing field completely. Like its predecessor, this is a great book for budding historians.
