John Ross, Cherokee Chief
This is my great grandfather's book, so naturally I love it for very sentimental reasons, but I think others should read it because it really is a picture of America in a very specific time and place. His descriptions of first coming to this country and making his living by being a peddler are fascinating. He remembers details that are so different from how life is now in the 21st century that it is almost a jolt to think of how much has changed. I also found myself saddened at the state of how we treat people, especially Syrians, trying to enter this country and make a life for themselves. I wish everyone could read his immigrant experience and how much he loved this country and how grateful he was to get to live her.
Get your elders to tell you their stories so you can pass them on, in their own words. This book is a treasure to our family because it is our story, our history, and it matters and changes how we live in the present.
