The Pyramid under the Cross: Franciscan Discourses of Evangelization and the Nahua Christian Subject in Sixteenth-Century Mexico
Okay, okay - so I helped edit this book, which is by a former professor of mine. But I still like it! The book is written by an academic theologian with a general audience in mind; it derives its main argument, as Christians are wont to do, from the life of Jesus. Cooey makes the pretty radical argument - addressed to a U.S. church-going audience - that following the example of Jesus, they/we need to express solidarity with the "other" by de-privileging our own notions of what the "other" desires, and in some, many, or most cases being comfortable with not knowing or understanding what that desire may be. I think it's a pretty anarchistic and very anti-imperialist argument, and the idea has stayed with me in the several years since I read the book.
