Grand Coulee: Harnessing a Dream is an excellent history of the conception, planning, building, and evolution of the Grand Coulee Dam and the Columbia Basin.
The author delves in much detail into the politics and conflicts between interests in Spokane and interests in the western Columbia basin, far western Washington, and Eastern and Midwestern interest groups as well as the Government. As a relatively new resident in Washington State, I learned much about the background of Washington state in the late 19th and 20th centuries and why this background matters today.
The book's copyright is 1994, and some of it is dated as a result. It would be very interesting to see the author's views on the continuing evolution of attitudes towards resource management and the taming of rivers. The recent removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon Dams on the Olympic Peninsula show how the nation is changing.
The book is recommended for those interested in the history of Washington State and the Great Depression. It is very well written and the author gives considered opinion and his reasoning for his opinions.
